Michael Haslund-ChristensenThe Gold Coast film is now finally at the end of a long and challenging journey. When Daniel Dencik and I thought about producing this movie, everyone thought it was impossible. So we set out to prove everybody wrong.

But how did we approach this dark area of humanity? We had a great desire to shoot the movie on location, where the slave trade happened in the past. But how do you build a partnership with Ghana and how could we in the very early stage of research and script development reach nuanced insights from Ghana, for a story that consisted of both our own and the Ghanaian insight into the conditions at that time?

By luck and network, we were introduced to inGenius Africa and also to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, this was an eye opener. Two cultures met and, slowly but surely, we formed a relationship over one and a half years before shooting started last summer, with a new method of filmmaking formed through our collaboration, and by mixing both cast and crew. All the 25 Danes, Swedes and Norwegians, who formed part of the crew and cast, have gone back totally enriched by the experience, and I know that our hospitable Ghanaian hosts, partners and colleagues have also benefited from the experience.

The recording times, although stressful as usual, were full of excitement and new discoveries as we travelled around Ghana and enjoyed the high end expertise of our local team, and also received great hospitality at all the beautiful locations. It was a very special experience, and for sure, what you also see in the final movie.

In the end, we believe we have made a world class historical fiction film. We hope Gold Coast brings enlightenment and entertainment, and that it will put focus on our past and also point forward to the successful collaboration of today and onwards, between Denmark and Ghana. To prove everybody wrong, that impossible things can actually happen.

We look forward to seeing our partners, Ghanaian producers, cast and talent, in Denmark for the premiere. We hope you have gained insight on how the film and our collaboration can actually benefit all. We count on your support.
